Through the Kaleidoscope:Reframing OrganizationsFriday, January 28th, 20058:00 am to 4:30 pm with Anne Jane Grieve and Jane Adams OverviewSeasoned managers and consultants have a variety of ways to approach organizational issues. All, however, have preferred approaches to issues that may blind them to their own personal biases about what is going on. In this workshop we'll provide an introduction to Bolman and Deal's book Reframing Organizations. We'll learn four lenses through which to reframe and understand complex organizational events; Structural Frame: Goals, specialized roles, relationships, division of labor (i.e. redesigning an organizational chart) Human Resources Frame: People's skills, attitudes, energy, commitment, feelings, assumptions and skills (i.e. people development) Political Frame: Strategy, tactics, bargaining, negotiation, influence, coercion, and compromise (i.e. centers of influence) Symbolic Frame: Symbols which anchor hope and faith, metaphor, heroes, humour and play (i.e. shared vision) The purpose of this workshop is to show how reframing and a four frame approach to organizations, management, and good leadership can open the scope of our choices. We'll explore real life organizational examples and understand how some issues may be most effectively addressed through one lens and not another. BenefitsWe are offering: - * a lively, interactive workshop that promotes dialogue around the frames
- * a useful and useable template for organizational diagnosis and action
- * a schema and language for joint problem solving
- * the experience of both participants and special invited OD clients who bring depth to the frames based on their own experience
- *the excitement of being able to see the same organization, simultaneously, as machine, family, jungle, and theatre!
